Bursitis

A bursae is a small cushion near joints that provides extra support and comfort to bones and soft tissue that crosses those bones at the joint. When these bursae become inflamed it is called bursitis. Shoulders, elbows and knees are most commonly affected, but any bursae can become inflamed. Sometimes this happens as a result of traumatic injury, but most frequently, it is the result of overuse. Certain medical conditions can increase the risk of bursitis. Rest is the first step in treatment of bursitis. Massage therapy can assist by reducing the tension in tight muscles around the joint, and guiding the client through range of motion exercises to return to normal function.
