Soft Tissue Mobilization Course – Level 1
This course is designed to enhance soft tissue mobilization skills of massage therapists and traditional body workers – as well as increase the knowledge and understanding of how techniques from complimentary therapies can help to increase the body’s natural function, decrease dysfunction and stress in soft tissue, and enhance the overall therapeutic success of the therapist’s practice.
Soft Tissue Mobilization, as it relates to massage therapy, is everything other than bone. Soft tissue does include the organs but for the purpose of this course – the focus will be on muscle, tendon, ligament, bursa, fascia, and nerve. The treatment of these structures is known as Soft Tissue Mobilization.
When trauma occurs, even repeated micro trauma, inflammation occurs. The production of inflammation leads to the formation of scar tissue – which in turn, causes a decreased ability of the muscle to lengthen and contract as it normally does – which leads to decreased range of motion, muscle guarding, adaptive shortening, myo-fascia restrictions, pain, and other conditions disrupting the normal function of the body’s soft tissue/muscle.
Myofascial Release (MFR) is a soft tissue therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain. Self-myofascial release (or SMFR) refers to the application of someone performing this therapy on themselves. This alternative medicine therapy aims to relax contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphic circulation, and stimulate the stretch reflex in muscles. Fascia is a thin, tough, elastic type of connective tissue that wraps most structures within the human body – including muscle.
Tuina Massage Therapy is based on the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) using specific manipulations or massage tools to operate on certain areas or acupoints on the surface of the body. Tuina treatments can regulate the body’s physiological and pathological condition to treat and prevent disease. This therapy and its techniques help to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues, enhances skin tone, and increases the elimination (detoxification) of chemical wastes from the body – which in turn helps to boost the immune system. Tuina Therapy also helps to regulate and balance the Yin and Yang body energies. At the same time it is a wonderful soothing experience.
Gua Sha (meaning “scraping sha-bruises”) is a Traditional Chinese medical technique used to treat everything from fevers to digestive problems to back pain. For the purpose of this course – the focus will be directed on this therapy’s ability to decrease tone in muscle (hypertonicity), help align and restore muscle fibres, release unhealthy elements in soft tissue (such as toxins and metabolic waste) and to stimulate healthy blood flow and healing.
Gua Sha involves scraping the surface of the skin to release myofascial tensions and restrictions in soft tissue and as a result helps to relieve muscle tissue (and fascia) that feels “tight” or “stuck”. The skin is scraped (or pulled) to produce redness or light bruising – and involves repeated pressured strokes on a lubricated skin surface using specific hand manipulations and tools along muscles and meridians.
By learning to use a combination of additional techniques and skills taken from the tool box of the above three alternative therapies – this course will demonstrate and teach how soft tissue movement during massage therapy treatments and other healing sessions can help the overall health and wellness of patients and clients – and add to the overall effectiveness and success of a clinical practice.
